What a success story. What a rush. The story of Pillars of Eternity is a long and fascinating one. Obsidian Entertainment, on the verge of bankruptcy, took to Kickstarter, a crowd funding website, to pitch their game idea. That idea was a return to the classic isometric role playing games of yore; Baldur’s gate, Icewind Dale and Planescape: Torment – a genre that publishers simply wouldn’t touch for fear that the audience wasn’t interested. How wrong they were. The game raised almost four million dollars by the time the campaign ended.
Now we’re on the eve of the game launching; the game has now amassed more than the four million dollars they got during their Kickstarter, with new pledges being added all the time, and the game is approaching the top spot on the Steam Top Sellers list. A true success story that saved Obsidian and paved the way for other companies to do likewise.
