Borderlands: What next?

Posted on November 02, 2015 by Terry

Borderlands was an amazing success. For an ugly game with dodgy controls and a weird story the game struck a chord with many players for its Diablo like look system, RPG like numbers and, crucially, 4 player co-operative play. Since then the series has evolved – but has kept those key and core tenants intact to differentiate itself from the competition. Destiny has since arrived to try and take those to a bigger scale, but the humour and personality of Borderlands has kept it individual and unique.   But where does the series go from here? Does it double down on what it has? These larger environments, with a great art style and a dash of humour? Or does it go bigger? Does it go for... Read More

Wildstar: Going free to play

Now this is something that I think everyone who keeps an eye on the MMO market was expecting. Wildstar, from a team of ex-WoW veterans (among others) launched 2 years ago with a decent amount of hype behind it. It looked like WoW, played like more recent MMOs and had the years of changes and developments that people would expect. That was surely the recipe for success? It turned out, however, that making a game too similar to WoW, and asking people to pay for it, was a poor choice. Why would they pay to play a game like WoW, when they could just play WoW?   The masses spoke and now Wildstar is going free to play. You can still buy the game and pay your subscription if you like, which... Read More

Team Secret: Master of the throw

Posted on August 11, 2015 by Terry

Going into this year’s DOTA 2 International there was one team on everyone’s lips. A team of superstars; previous International winners and some of the most skilled and feared players in the world. They had the captain, they had the tactics and they had the skill and swagger to cause damage to every single team in the competition. Team Secret came into the tournament hot favourites but, after a loss to the Chinese team eHome, found themselves in the bottom half of the draw and up against VP from Russia. After losing the first game Team Secret roared back in the second and comfortably took the game to level the series 1-1. However in the final match they choked; their two youngest... Read More

Heroes of Newerth: The best MOBA to date

Posted on July 10, 2015 by Terry

The MOBA genre has become extremely stagnated over the past few years. With League of Legends and DOTA 2 dominating the player base they leave very little room for other, decent, games to get much playtime. Before the DOTA 2 explosion the landscape was much more even, with several smaller MOBAs picking up decent player numbers and expanding the genre in interesting ways, whereas now the only meaningful exploration of the genre is shifting to first person. Heroes of Newerth, HON to friends, remains the best MOBA to date though. It’s not a massive stray from the original DOTA formula but it gets the pace so very right. Character movement is fast and responsive meaning that player skill is... Read More

Splatoon: Shooting for kids

Posted on June 14, 2015 by Terry

Shooting games are often slapped with an 18 certificate. If they’re lucky, tone down on swearing and maybe a little less blood, they might just land themselves at a 15 and open the sales door to a whole load more people (not that that ever stop idiot parents buying their young kids adult games anyway.) Nintendo, not often a developer associated with shooting games (outside of the stunning Metroid Prime series) has recently released its take on the third person shooting genre; Splatoon. Splatoon is a game where your bullets are paint. You maneuver around the maps by traversing through ink of your team’s colour for faster movement. The objective of the game is to cover the majority of the... Read More
